Before Bathing the Buddha, it is preferred that you bathe, change into clean clothes, wash your hands, purify your heart, pray, and with a heart of reverence, sincerity and gratitude participate in Buddha Bathing.
Grandmaster JinBodhi: “Bathing the Buddha is really bathing and cleansing ourselves. When we pour fragrant flowers and pure water over the baby Buddha, we are showing our respect and receiving merit and wisdom. We must also remind ourselves to leave behind body-mind impurities and maintain illumination within so that our hearts and consciousness are illuminated. Buddha is the embodiment of all that is wonderful and perfect. As we bathe Him with one scoop of cleansing water, Buddha bestows upon those with karmic connection a chance to regain their health and be reborn.”
Buddha Bathing – the ritual
1) Palms together. Chant the mantra sincerely.
Chant "Na Mo Ben Shi Shi Jia Mo Ni Fo" 3 times.
It means "Namo Cardinal Teacher Sakyamuni Buddha".
2) Chant silently《The Hymn of Bathing the Buddha》
We now bathe Tathagatas to accumulate purity, wisdom, solemnity, merits, and virtues. May sentient beings eliminate their impurity and realize the pure entity of Tathagatas.
3) When Buddha Bathing, chant and visualize:
With piety, I bathe the Buddhas and Tathagatas with pure water. The Buddha is pure, wise, and solemn. His merits and virtues are as deep as the sea. I hope that all beings in our turbid world will be akin to Buddhas by becoming pure embodiments of dharma.
4) Buddha Bathing
Commemorate the moment of Buddha’s birth by bathing a small, standing statue of the baby Buddha – its right hand pointing up and left hand pointing down (symbolizing his arrival to unite Heaven and Earth). With reverence, pray for peace and harmony everywhere, fill a ladle with water from the basin provided, and pour it over the statue to “bathe” the baby. To bathe the Buddha is to purify our mind, body and spirit, to purge negative karma from lives past, present and future, and to embrace the auspicious light that washes over us all. As you pour each ladle of water, say the wish: May all sentient beings be cleansed of their pollution and attain Buddhahood. Repeat 3 times.
5) Dedicate the merit and virtue
Chant and think to yourself: May this auspicious and blessed merit and virtue be dedicated to all sentient beings across all the dharma realms. May all their negative karma and karmic afflictions and obstacles be eliminated. May all attain enlightenment.
6) Wash Your Hands in the Golden Basin
This ritual gives you a chance to dispel a harmful, negative behaviour such as gambling or smoking. Before washing your hands in the golden basin, make a commitment to stop a bad habit, large or small, by making a vow to Buddha. Washing your hands also cleanses impurities and gives you a fresh start with a pure and light-filled body and mind.
7) Express gratitude in whatever manner feels right for you.
The Origin of Bathing the Buddha
Bathing the Buddha commemorates the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha. According to sutras, the newborn prince, pointing one hand up at the sky and the other downwards to the earth, said, “In heaven and on earth, I am supreme.” The universe became illuminated at the time and a heavenly dragon sprang forth, spring water gushing from the mouth to bathe the baby Buddha. Thus, Buddha’s birth was a watershed moment in transforming the natural laws of the universe. The lost and suffering can follow Buddha’s guidance to walk on a path of self-liberation. Thus the ritual of Bathing the Buddha originated to symbolize the human capacity to cleanse ourselves of afflictions and obstacles. So, on the occasion of Sakyamuni Buddha’s birthday, we bathe the baby Buddha with fragrant flowers and pure water to cleanse our body, speech, and mind, eliminate negative karma, gain Buddha-like compassion and wisdom and transform our fates.
The Meaning of Bathing the Buddha
Bathing the Buddha, in fact, allows us to gain physical and mental purity and let go of impurities. The ritual eliminates all obstacles, purifies the body, mind and soul, and cleanses all life to become pure and untainted.
